Pipe Wall Thickness Calculator

Estimate straight-pipe pressure thickness and nominal wall, or the pressure supported by a selected wall.

Inputs

Use the allowable stress from your applicable code edition, material, and temperature. Not yield strength.
Verify Y for your material and temperature; 0.4 is only an example.

Results

Choose your inputs and calculate.

Calculation basis

t = P D / [2(S E W + P Y)]
Minimum nominal wall = (t + c) / (1 − mill tolerance)
tavailable = Tnominal(1 − mill tolerance) − c
P = 2 S E W tavailable / (D − 2 Y tavailable)
Scope checks: t < D/6 and P/(SE) ≤ 0.385.

How to use this calculator

Use outside diameter for this calculation. Allowance c is added after calculating the pressure-design wall; negative mill tolerance is then applied to nominal thickness. Select a commercially available wall at least as thick as the result and check all other governing loads and component ratings.

B31.3-style straight-pipe internal-pressure equation only. Supply S, E, W, and Y for the governing code edition and design temperature. This is not a complete code-compliance, external-pressure, fatigue, branch, bending, flange, or pressure-test evaluation.
